Abby Kraemer and
Alexa Kopaska combined for a four-hit shutout to lead Dordt University to a 2-0 win over Avila University in a Friday night game in the Defenders home classic played at the American State Bank Sports Complex.
Dordt extended its win streak to four games and improved to 8-2 this season heading into a pair of games on Saturday against (RV) Bellevue and Dakota State.
Kopaska (2-0) and Kraemer pitched a gem for the Defenders, giving up a combined four hits, one walk and striking out six. Kopaska earned her second win as she pitched the final five scoreless innings.
Scoreless into the bottom of the sixth, Emme Groen reached on an infield single and advanced to third after and Avila error on a ball hit by
Ivy Terpstra. Following a pitching change,
Ella Koster delivered an RBI single to score Groen and advancing Terpstra to third. A double steal by Koster and Terpstra led to the Defenders second run.
Kopaska ensured the 2-run lead held up as the freshman struck out back-to-back hitter to start the seventh and then earned the final out on a harmless flyout to rightfield.

Dordt's offense managed just four hits, all singles, two by Koster and one each for Groen and Terpstra.
Chaunell Penn (2-1) pitched well in the loss, striking out four and giving up three hits and two walks. Chelsea Kurtz, Kat Wilds, Kennedee Lara and Ka'Zem Wood all had singles to lead the Eagles offense.
