The Dordt Defenders secured a 76-69 road win on Saturday afternoon, February 4 at Seward, Nebraska against Concordia with a strong second half performance.
Dordt got down 7-0 early in the first quarter but responded later in the period with a 9-0 run that turned a 12-6 deficit into a 15-12 lead with a
Macey Nielson three-point shot punctuating the run at the 2:09 mark. The quarter ended with the teams tied 19-19.
The second period was played tight throughout with Concordia pulling away from a 35-35 tie to lead 42-37 at the halftime break. Dordt started the second half with a basket by
Janie Schoonhoven, a pair of
Karly Gustafson free throws and a
Bailey Beckman basket for a 44-42 lead. Schoonhoven followed with a pair of baskets to extend the lead to 48-42 with 7:29 left in the quarter.
Dordt had the lead up to nine points but Concordia sliced into the difference and had it down to 56-54 at the 2:31 mark of  the period. A Beckman three-point shot followed by Gustafson and Schoonhoven scoring quickly built the lead to 63-54 and Dordt settled for a seven point lead as the quarter ended.
Concordia again cut into the lead at and it down to 66-65 with 6:00 left in the game. Gustafson extended the lead by one on a free throw and a defensive stop later Gustafson made a pair of free throws to go up 69-65. Concordia was no closer than two the rest of the game and never had the ball with a chance to tie or take the lead. Dordt made 5-6 free throws in the closing moments to secure the 76-69 win.
THE NUMBERS
- Dordt was 27-61 from the field and 7-21 from the three-point line while making 15-22 free throws.
- Concordia was 22-53 from the field and 8-21 from the arc and made 17-20 free throws.
- Dordt had a 38-30 rebounding advantage and forced 13 turnovers while committing nine.
- Bailey Beckman scored 24Â and had two rebounds and two steals and was 3-3 from the three-point line.
- Karly Gustafson had 17 points and seven rebounds with five assists.
- Janie Schoonhoven scored 13 with 10 rebounds and two assists and Hayden Heimensen added seven.
- Dordt is now 23-1 overall and 17-1 in the GPAC while Concordia is 16-8 overall and 12-6 in the conference.
