The Dordt Defenders and Midland Warriors played to a split in the doubleheader featuring the two unbeaten in the GPAC teams Tuesday night in Fremont, Nebraska. Dordt forged a 2-1, 12-inning win in the first game and Midland was a 7-4 winner in game two. Â
GAME 1
Midland scored first in the game with a pair of doubles in the bottom of the second inning, the second one with two outs, to take a 1-0 lead.
Neither team had a base runner in the third inning and it was Dordt that answered in the top of the fourth with
Karli Olsen singling to start the inning and she advanced on a wild pitch.
Ivy Terpstra then delivered a one-out double that plated Olsen for the equalizer.
Neither team had a base runner again until the top of the sixth when
Chandler Schemper started the inning with a triple. A line drive out and a pair of strikeouts ended the threat and Midland responded with a two-out double in the sixth but left the runner stranded.
The tense battle moved to the seventh where Dordt advanced
Aurora Tyson to third with two outs but the hosts were able to get out of trouble. Midland came close to winning the game in the eighth with a two-out single followed by a stolen base. The runner made it to third on a wild pitch but was left stranded after a walk and a lineout.
Both teams had runners at second in the ninth but couldn't capitalize. Midland again had a runner on third in the bottom of the 11
th but a pop out ended the threat. Dordt finally broke through in the 12
th. With the international tiebreaker in effect, Dordt had
Emma Groen at second to start the inning. A bunt by Tyson advanced her to third and
Lauren Steenstra laid down a bunt that pushed Groen in from third.
Midland's last chance came when they also bunted the runner to third but a ground out and a pop out ended the game with Dordt winning 2-1.
THE NUMBERS
- Dordt outhit Midland 7-6.
- Aurora Tyson was 3-4 at the plate.
- Chandler Schemper was 2-5 with a triple.
- Abby Kraemer earned her 12th win of the season with seven hits allowed, one earned run, two walks and 15 strikeouts. Kraemer is now 12-3.
GAME 2
Ivy Terpstra singled in a run to start Dordt's scoring in the first inning of the second game but Midland answered with two in the home half of the frame and never trailed again.
The Warriors added three more in the third and then held off the Defender rally. Dordt scored two in the fifth with
Karli Olsen grounding out with the bases loaded to score one and
Ella Koster knocked in two with a double later in the frame to cut it to 5-4.
Midland eventually answered with two runs for insurance in the sixth inning and kept the tying run from coming to the plate in the seventh to fight for the split.
THE NUMBERS
- Dordt was outhit 12-6 with six different players each delivering a single.
- Midland got six hits and four runs scored from their first two batters.
- Hailey Wilken absorbed her second loss of the season with five innings pitched and she scattered nine hits with five runs allowed and she struck out four with two walks. Â Wilken is now 9-2.
- Dordt is 5-1 in the conference and 24-6 overall and Midland is 7-1 in the GPAC and 22-7 overall.
