The Dordt softball team split its doubleheader with Hastings on Friday night in games played at the ASB Sports Complex Dome in Sioux Center, Iowa. The games, which were originally scheduled to be played outdoors, were moved inside due to rain and lightning in the midafternoon. Dordt prevailed in game one 4-2 and Hastings took a 5-4 game 2 decision in a 10-inning affair.
GAME 1
Dordt scored a run each in the first three innings and added another run in the fifth to secure the game one win.
Ella Koster knocked in
Chandler Schemper to start the scoring and
Brooklynn Cox tripled in
Lauren Steenstra in the second inning for a 2-0 lead.
Emma Groen's double plated
Karli Olsen in the third for a 3-0 lead but Hastings struck with a single and then a two-run homerun to cut the difference to 3-2.
Ivy Terpstra pushed the Defenders back up by two with a triple that scored
Ella Koster and the Defenders held on for the win.
THE NUMBERS
GAME 2
Hastings got the winning run across in the top of the 10
th inning and held on as Dordt was unable to get run in to tie the game in the home half of the extra frame.
The Broncos scored in the first and Dordt answered with a run in the bottom of the inning after
Ella Koster stole second and
Chandler Schemper scored from third on the errant throw to try and catch her. Koster later scored an unearned run when
Ivy Terpstra had a sacrifice fly to give Dordt a 2-1 lead. Hastings answered with three unanswered runs with a run in the second, third and sixth innings.
In the meantime Dordt left the bases loaded in the fifth but two runs in the sixth inning with Koster knocking in one with a single and
Ivy Terpstra's ground out tied the game. Dordt left two runners in scoring position in that inning and the game eventually went to extra innings.
Neither team threatened until the international tiebreaker was put in effect and Hastings got a double to knock in a run and Dordt was unable to get a runner in from third to tie the game.
THE NUMBERS
- Brooklynn Cox was 3-4 with a run scored and Ella Koster was 2-5 with a run scored and a run batted in.
- Ella Koster and Brooklynn Cox each had two stolen bases and all 10 of Dordt's hits were singles.
- Abby Kramer took the loss in relief and pitched four innings and was charged with an unearned run and she struck out six.
- Alexa Kopaska pitched four innings and gave up two runs on four hits and had six strikeouts.
- Hailey Wilken gave up two runs on four hits in two innings of work for Dordt.
- The Defenders are 25-7 and 6-2 in the GPAC while Hastings is 14-18 and 8-6 in the league.
