Emilee Heynen won the 800m and 17 Defenders recorded a top 10 finish to highlight the first day of the Sioux City Relays for the Dordt University women's track and field team.
Day two (Saturday) at the relays has been canceled due to the predicted cold, wet conditions.
The Defenders occupied the top three finishers in today's 800m, led by Heynen, who overtook her teammates,
Mika Kooistra and
Shelby Buwalda, over the last 100 meters to get the win. Heynen finished with a time of 2:16.6, just shy of the provisional mark but good for the No.1 tiime in the GPAC. Kooistra bettered her time and now sits second in the current GPAC standings at 2:16.8. Buwalda ran a personal best time of 2:18.2 to finish third and has the fourth fastest time in the GPAC.
Buwalda led a group of six Defenders who finished among the top 10 in the triple jump. The freshman recorded her best jump, 10.53m, on her third attempt in the prelim and placed fourth in the field.
Paige Decker also placed in the top five and jumped 10.52m.
Dordt athletes recorded 17 top 10 finishes today; nine in field events and eight in the running events. Buwalda and
Ayda Den Herder both had a pair of top 10's today; Den Herder placed seventh in the 100m and fifth in the 200m where she had a personal best time of 26.0.
Emily Wingert finished as the runner-up and had a personal best in the high jump, clearing 1.60m.
