Softball Gets Sweep In Omaha

A dominating pitching performance and an offensive awakening led helped the Dordt Defender softball team to a pair of GPAC wins on the road against the College of Saint Mary on Monday in Omaha, Nebraska.

The Defenders secured a 1-0 win in game one and then trounced the Flames 14-2 in a shortened five-inning game two to bounce back from a pair of losses on Friday night.

GAME 1

Dordt got all the offense they needed in the first inning of game one with Karli Olsen singling with one out and she stole second before eventually scoring on an Aurora Tyson double for a 1-0 lead.

Dordt had a chance in the third inning to build the lead and had runners on second and third but a ground out ended the threat. The Flames also had limited chances with just two hits off of Abby Kraemer as the senior allowed just three base runners.

The hosts did get a runner on third with two outs in the fourth but a strikeout ended the threat and their runner in the sixth was stranded at first.

THE NUMBERS

  • Karli Olsen had two hits and Tyson's double and Taylor Knaack's single accounted for Dordt's four hits.
  • Both teams had an error and Dordt had a 4-2 hits advantage.
  • Abby Kraemer won her 16th game in 20 decisions while throwing a two-hitter and she struck out three with no walks.

GAME 2

The Defenders scored multiple runs in each of the first four innings on the way to the five-inning 14-2 win. Dordt played four in the first with run scoring singles by Karli Olsen, Emma Groen, Lauren Steenstra and Brynn Torrenga and then added two more in the second with an Aurora Tyson single and a Groen sacrifice fly.

The Defenders added two more in the third with Olsen and Ella Koster each knocking in a run with a single and Dordt banged out six run in the fourth inning to win by the eventual 14-2 measure.

THE NUMBERS

  • Olsen and Koster each had three hits and three runs batted in with two runs scored.
  • Torrenga was 2-2 with a run scoring and a run batted in and Brooklynn Cox scored two runs.
  • Chandler Schemper scored three times and had a single as Dordt totaled 13 hits and all of them were singles.
  • Alexa Kopaska pitched four innings for the win and struck out two with a run allowed.
  • Hailey Wilken pitched an inning and allowed one run on four hits.
  • Dordt is now 30-10 overall and 11-5 in the league. The College of Saint Mary is 2-16 in the league and 5-32 overall.
