Softball Splits GPAC Doubleheader With Jamestown

The Defender softball team split a doubleheader on Thursday, April 27 in Aberdeen, South Dakota against Jamestown.  Dordt pulled away from a 2-2 tie to win game one 5-2 but surrendered five runs in the third and fourth innings of game two and fell 6-1.  Dordt is tied for third place in the conference with one doubleheader to play.

GAME 1

Dordt scored two in the first inning, the first on a throwing error on an Ella Koster steal of second base that allowed Karli Olsen to score and Koster later scored on a similar play with Aurora Tyson stealing second base. Dordt missed on an even bigger inning with an out recorded at third and another at home.

Jamestown took advantage of two unearned runs in the first and the score remained tied until the fourth inning. In the fourth Lauren Steenstra singled to score two and Chandler Schemper had a single that got Emma Groen in for the eventual 5-2 final.   Jamestown had a runner on base in the fifth, sixth and seventh but couldn't get the timely hit.

THE NUMBERS

  • Dordt had six hits with Aurora Tyson getting two singles.
  • All of Dordt's hits were singles.
  • Abby Kraemer won her 18th game and allowed no earned runs with one walk and 10 strikeouts.
  • Ella Koster scored two runs and Lauren Steenstra had two runs batted in.

GAME 2

Jamestown got a run in the first but Dordt answered with Aurora Tyson knocking in Ella Koster in the top of the third.  Jamestown answered immediately with two in the third and added three more in the fourth for the final.
Dordt had baserunners in each of the first five innings and the Defenders had two on base in two of them.

THE NUMBERS

NEXT

Dordt is scheduled to host Concordia Saturday, April 29 to conclude the regular season.  The Defenders are 33-11 overall and 14-6 in the league. Dordt is tied with Midland for third place and trails Morningside in second by game.

Morningside travels to face Jamestown on Saturday while Midland faces Northwestern.
