The Dordt Defender softball team lost a 2-1 nailbiter in the opening round of the GPAC Postseason Tournament and Dordt will now play in an elimination game on Wednesday night, May 3 at 6:00 in Orange City.
Dordt struck first with
Chandler Schemper walking to lead off the bottom of the first inning and she advanced on a
Karli Olsen sacrifice bunt. A wild pitch advanced Schemper to third base and
Aurora Tyson delivered a single to center field for a 1-0 lead.
The lead held until the top of the fifth inning when Briar Cliff got a softly hit single to left field and a sharply hit ball to left field followed to put runners at first and second. Ali Naumann then delivered a double to the gap that allowed both runners to score for a 2-1 lead.
Briar Cliff threatened again in the sixth inning but came away empty and left the bases loaded. Meanwhile, Dordt's only threat in the closing innings was a Tyson single with two outs in the seventh inning and the game ended with her on first base.
THE NUMBERS
- Dordt was outhit 6-3 and neither team had an error.
- Aurora Tyson had two singles and scored a run for the Defenders and Brynn Torrenga had Dordt's other hit, a single.
- Abby Kraemer took the loss while scattering six hits and she struck out 12 with two walks and gave up two earned runs.
- Dordt is now 35-12 overall and will face Mount Marty in an elimination game. Mount Marty lost to Northwestern 5-2 to start the day.
