Briar Cliff defeats Dordt 3-0 (19-25, 25-23, 22-25, 25-19, 15-11)
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Briar Cliff Chargers used a late run in set four to force a decisive fifth set and took a 15-11 decision from Dordt in Sioux City on September 20 in GPAC play.
The Defenders controlled set one and built a 13-6 lead with three straight points, getting two kills from
Riley Doenhoefer in the string. Another three-point run with a
Madison Vis ace, a kill by
Ellie Dokter and a kill by
Bryleigh Schweer put the Defenders up 18-10 and they went on to win the set 25-19.
Briar Cliff had a 13-11 lead in set two before Dordt rallied for a 14-13 advantage after an attack error. A service error tied the set and started a four-point run by the hosts. Dordt closed to within 21-20 and again 22-21 but Briar Cliff got to set point up 24-21. A service error and a block by
Ellie Weg and
Ellie Dokter had Dordt in striking distance but a service error ended the set giving Briar Cliff a 25-23 lead.
Dordt responded with a 9-1 start in set three and never relinquished the lead as Briar Cliff fought back to tie it 21-21 and 22-22 but a block by
Bryleigh Schweer and Dokter, an attack error and a
Payton Doenhoefer kill made the final 25-22. A fast start followed in set four as Dordt went up 5-0 but the Chargers didn't fade, taking the lead and 10-9 and used a 6-0 run to go up 19-14 before winning 25-19.
Dordt trailed in set five but rallied to take a 4-3 lead on another Vis ace, her fifth of the match and Dordt was up 7-4 after a Weg and Dokter block. Weg got a kill for an 8-5 lead and Dordt was still up 11-9 after another kill by Weg. A Charger kill and Dordt attack error tied the set and a ball handling error by Dordt put Briar Cliff up 12-11 and the Chargers followed with three straight points to win 15-11.
THE NUMBERS
- Dordt had a 55-47 kills advantage but committed 35 attack errors and nine service errors.
- Briar Cliff had nine ace serves and an 11-8 points off of blocks advantage.
- Ellie Dokter had a career high 20 kills and had six block assists.
- Riley Doenhoefer had nine kills and Ellie Weg eight.
- Kelly McArthur put up 29 assists and Sophie Johnson had 16.
- Madison Vis had 17 digs and five service aces.
- Makenna Kooima got to 24 digs and Lydia Van Kley had 12.
- Dordt is now 1-10 overall and 0-5 in the GPAC. Briar Cliff is 6-11 and 1-3.
