(Thursday, January 11; Sioux Center, Iowa) Emily DeHaan, a senior at Flatirons Academy (Colorado), has announced her intention to attend Dordt University and join the Defender basketball program. 

"We are so excited to welcome Emly to Dordt University.  Emily is a great basketball player but a better person who is selfless and invests in others.  She certainly embodies the tenants of the Defender Way and will impact not only our basketball program but the larger campus community," said Dordt head basketball coach Bill Harmsen.  

DeHaan is a 5-9 guard who averages 15 points per game with three assists and 4.4 rebounds per game. She has converted 34 percent of her three-point shots and averages 3.3 steals per game and earned first-team all-conference honors in 2023 along with honorable mention all-state accolades. DeHaan was a second-team all-state selection in 2022 while also earning first-team all-conference honors.  She was part of a state champion team in 2021 and plays for the Colorado Basketball Club.  

"I absolutely love the people and the community there and I went on a visit and everyone I talked to was super nice and helpful. I also have a lot of family that has gone there in the past and loved it. In addition, I was looking for somewhere I could get a great Christian education while playing basketball at a competitive level and Dordt had all those things," said DeHaan, 

Emily is the daughter of Lori and David DeHaan of Fort Lupton, Colorado, She plans to study business at Dordt.  

Dordt University in Sioux Center, Iowa, is a comprehensive Christian college rooted in the Reformed tradition. The Defender athletic program is a part of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC), American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA) and the Mid-American Collegiate Hockey Association (MACHA).    

U.S. News & World Report, Money Magazine, Forbes.com, Washington Monthly, and Princeton Review all list Dordt on their best colleges lists. Dordt is home to approximately 1,500 students.
