Defenders Split Games on Final Day of ASB Dome Classic

The Dordt University softball team finished off its February schedule with a split of games on the final day at the ASB Dome Classic played this afternoon in the American State Bank Sports Complex.

Dordt earned a 10-2 (5 innings) win against Dickinson State (N.D.) in the first game but dropped its second game to Mayville State (N.D.) 2-1. The Defenders finished the weekend with a 3-1 record and are now 7-8 this season.

Aurora Tyson led the Defenders at the plate, going 4-for-6 with two RBIs in the two games. Freshmen Chloe Kreuz and Ashtyn Grissom both recorded three hits with Kreuz extending her hit streak to eight games. 

Game One, Key Plays vs Dickinson State:

  • the Defenders went ahead with a run in the first on an RBI triple by Kreuz that scored Karli Olsen
  • Dickinson State pushed its two runs across in the top of the third on a leadoff double by Cassy Loa, a triple from Dallis Mitchell and a sacrifice fly by Bailey Hansen
  • down 2-1, the Defenders tied the game in the fourth on a leadoff double by Grissom, who came around to score after a groundout hit by Emma Groen
  • the Defenders blew the game open with an eight-run fifth inning where 11 batters came to the plate
    • Olsen started the inning with a single and, following a pop-up to short, Kreuz, Grissom and Lauren Steenstra all hit singles to give Dordt the lead 3-2 and force a pitching change
    • Kacie Karsak greeted the new Dickinson State pitcher with an RBI single to make the score 4-2
    • Groen and Brynn Torrenga were both by pitch, leading to two more runs
    • Brooke Rule hit an infield single to drive in another run (7-2), followed by a Olsen RBI groundout (8-2)
    • Tyson then ended the game with a two-run single

Game One, By the Numbers:

  • Dordt totaled 11 hits against the Blue Hawks, its fourth straight game with 10+ hits
  • Bailey Sample and Jadyn Faber combined to give up just three hits to Dickinson State
  • Faber (1-0) retired all seven batters in 2.1 perfect innings to earn the win
  • Tyson, Kreuz and Grissom all had two hits to pace the Defenders 11-hit attack; both Tyson and Groen had two RBIs each
  • eight Defenders had at least one hit
  • Reannan Butler took the loss, giving up four runs in 1.1 innings

Game Two, Key Plays vs Mayville State:

  • Dordt had two hits but no runs in the top of the first, a two-out double from Olsen, who was thrown out at the plate after a single by Kreuz
  • the Comets scored both runs after three straight singles by Mackenzie Iverson, Megan Elliott and Lindsey Tulla
  • the Defenders continued to trail 2-0 until a two-out, RBI single from Grissom that scored Olsen in the sixth inning

Game Two, By the Numbers:

  • both teams accounted for six hits
  • Kreuz (4-3) took the hard-luck loss in the circle, ending her three-game win streak 
    • the freshman gave up one earned run and struck out two
  • Tyson was the lone Defender with multiple hits, going 2-for-3
  • Lacey Mathiowetz (1-0) earned the win, going the full seven innings with five strikeouts
