The Dordt University baseball team concluded the weekend with a trio of losses to Avila (Mo.) today in Kansas City, Mo. The Defenders concluded a game from Friday night that was suspended due to darkness with a 7-6 loss in 10-innings. Dordt then lost its scheduled doubleheader today; 10-2 in game one and 3-2 in game two.Â
Dordt went 0-4 in the season opening four-game set while Avila improves to 4-4 this season.

Suspended Game Two Recap:
7-6 loss (10 innings)
- Prior to starting today's double header, the teams had to finish a game from Friday that was suspended due to darkness (no lights at the complex) tied 6-6 after eight innings. Dordt had a good scoring chance in the top of the ninth when Joseph Schlesselman was hit by pitch and advanced to second on a single by Jason Carrig off Avila relief pitcher Gio Armas. Armas, however, struck out the next three Dordt batters to end the rally.
- Dordt reliever Chance Aswell pitched a scoreless bottom of the ninth, giving up a one-out single before back-to-back strikeouts to end the ninth.
- The Defenders went down in order in the top of the 10th and Avila followed with a leadoff double by Paxton Andrade, who then advanced to third after a single hit by Armas. Dordt elected to intentionally walk Robby Cable to load the bases and set up a force out. Landon Vahle, however, hit a walkoff single that scored Andrade to earn the 7-6 win.
- Dordt trailed 5-0 after five innings on Friday only to rally with two runs in the sixth and four more runs in the top of the seventh to take the lead 6-5.Â
- Jason Carrig drove in the first Defenders run with an RBI single in the fifth that scored Nate Eliason.Â
- A bases loaded walk to Caleb Beard drove in the second run in the fifth
- Logan Harris led off the top of the seventh with a solo home run to cut the Eagles lead to 5-3
- Eliason and Phoenix West reached base via a walk and hit-by-pitch and both scored on a 3-run home run by Drew Oreskes as the Defenders took their first lead
- Avila tied the game (6-6) in the bottom of the seventh on one hit, a walk and two hit batsmen; Dordt reliever Julio Romero pitched out of a no-out, bases loaded jam to end the seventh
- Dordt totaled 12 hits, led by Jason Carrig and Phoenix West with three hits each; both Drew Oreskes and Logan Harris had two hits
- Jared Hughes pitched the first five innings on Friday, giving up five hits and four earned runs; Julio Romero pitched two scoreless innning of relief while Chance Laswell (0-1) picked up the loss

- Dordt faced an uphill battle early as they gave up seven runs to Avila in the bottom of the first inning; the Eagles sent 13 batters to the plate in the 7-run inning, the big hit coming on a Paxton Andrade 3-run triple
- trailing 8-0, the Defenders came back with a pair of runs in the fourth inning on a two-run double by Drew Oreskes
- Avila completed the scoring with a single run the fourth and fifth innings

- the Defenders lost their third one-run game of the four-game set on Saturday afternoon
- scoreless into the bottom of the third, Avila plated two runs on a two-run double by Rusten Traxler for a 2-0 lead after three innings
- Dordt scored its first run in the top of the sixth inning on a solo home run by Drew Oreskes, his second home run of the four-game set
- Avila added a pivotal insurance run in the home half of the sixth on an RBI single by Paxton Andrade to go up 3-1
- Dordt rallied in the seventh when Joseph Schlesselman hit a one-out single, advanced to second on a walk to Dylan Stanley and scored on a single by Phoenix West, sending Stanley to third
- following an intentional walk to Oreskes to load the bases with two outs, Avila ended the game with a strikeout
