Softball Splits Games Against William Penn and Buena Vista in ASB Dome Classic

GAME ONE:
The Dordt Defenders played the William Penn Statesmen to a 7-6 loss in extra innings this afternoon. 

HOW IT HAPPENED:
William Penn got on the board early in the first inning after Naranjo his an RBI single into right field and Geguzis hit and RBI single into center field. The Defenders were able to get back with in one in the second inning when Brooke Rule grounded out to the pitcher but was able to secure an RBI as Aurora Tyson would cross for the first run of the day. Lauren Steenstra tied it up in the top half of the third inning after grounding out to third where Brooklynn Coxx scored the tying run. William Penn answered right back with two singles to score two runs and take a 4-2 lead in the bottom half of the third. The Defenders had opportunities but were unable to crack through with seven runners left on base from the fourth inning to the seventh inning. Finally in the seventh inning, Aurora Tyson hit a double to right field that would clear the bases and plate three runs. Brooke Rule would hit a single that would allow Aurora Tyson to score. 

Dordt's lead wouldn't last long as William Penn would tie it up off a double to left field that plated two runs to send it into extras. The Defenders would bunt over Brooklynn Cox to third base to start the eighth but would not be able to bring her in. William Penn walked it off an inning later off a single to left field that scored Wilson.

By the numbers: GAME 2:
The Dordt Defenders played the Buena Vista Beavers to a 10-2 decision on Saturday night. 

HOW IT HAPPENED:
Dordt gave up a first inning run when runners were cornered. The Beavers attempted to steal second and when Karli Olsen attempted the throw down to second, No one was there to field the throw which allowed Druskis to cross home safely without a throw. Dordt would answer right back in the bottom half of the inning after Karli Olsen capitalized on a Chloe Kreuz lead off single. Olsen Double to left field and that allowed Kreuz to tie it up. Ashtyn Grissom would drive in Karli Olsen on a single to center field and the Defenders would lead 2-1.

The Beavers would tie it up an inning later after Druskis 3-1 count with the bases loaded. She took the pitch and thought it was ball four as did everyone else on the bases and they began to advance as if it were a walk. Karli Olsen attempted a pick off to first base and Elwood found herself in a rundown. Galler was able to cross home plate and everyone else advanced a base as well to make tie it up at two runs apiece.  

Dordt would take back the lead in the fifth inning off a Karli Olsen double that would score Brooklynn Cox. The Defenders would end the game in the sixth inning after scoring seven runs.

By the numbers:
  • Dordt collected nine hits, Buena Vista had three
  • Karli Olsen came away with two hits, both being doubles and had three RBIs
  • Ashtyn Grissom hit a triple
  • Chloe Kreu, Alyssa VIlla, and Brooklynn Cox all stole one base
  • Chloe Kreuz pitched a complete game with three five strikeouts, six walks, and two earned runs
  • Kreuz recieved the win (1-0)
Dordt's record is now 1-2 and their next game will be in SIoux Center against Mount Mercy for the second weekend of the ASB Dome Classic.
