Defenders Secure Five Set Win Over Dakota Wesleyan

The Dordt Defenders won a 3-2 decision over Dakota Wesleyan on Wednesday night at the De Witt Gym to improve to 4-1 in league play. The Defenders needed wins in set four and five and overcame an injury that left them out of their regular rotations for most of the night.

Dordt scored five of the first six points but the visitors challenged with a run to get to within 11-10. A Myra Carlson kill started a 5-0 run that was capped by an Ayden Den Herder and Payton Doenhoefer block for a 16-10 lead. Dordt then closed the set with four of the last five points to win 25-15.

Dordt continued to control the match in set two and had a 12-7 lead after kills by Tarren Spartz and Myra Carlson. A Dakota Wesleyan timeout ensued and the Tigers responded with seven points in a row and Dordt never led again in the set. Spartz tied it momentarily at 14-14 with a kill and Spartz had an ace serve to tie it again at 16. Dordt was within 20-19 after an Ellie Dokter kill but three points in a row by the Tigers gave them a lead that was insurmountable on the way to a 25-22 win.

Set three was tight with 11 ties up to 18-18. A four point run by the Tigers proved to be too much for the Defenders to overcome and the visitors went up 2-1 in the match with the 25-23 win after Dordt had it trimmed to 24-23. The Defenders regained control in set four and got up 10-4 and never let the Tigers mount a serious threat on the way to a 25-20 win.

The set four win led to the decisive fifth set and Dordt used an early three-point run with  Spartz getting a kill in between two Wesleyan attack errors. Wesleyan did rally to tied the set at 10-10 on a block but Dordt's answer came with a Carlson kill and a Tiger attack error. The teams then played side-out volleyball for the final six points and Dordt won it on a Dokter kill for a 15-13 victory.
