Sievers’ Last-Second Shot Lifts Dordt Past Northwestern, 73-71

The No.1 Dordt University women's basketball team remained unbeaten with a thrilling 73-71 victory over Northwestern in a GPAC clash Wednesday night at the De Witt Gymnasium. Macy Sievers delivered the game-winner with one second left, capping a night where she scored a game-high 26 points and dished out 11 assists.

The Defenders (6-0, 2-0 GPAC) started fast, shooting 53% in the first quarter to build a 24-17 lead. Northwestern (4-1, 1-1 GPAC) fought back in the second period, fueled by Ashtyn Wobig, who scored eight points for the Red Raiders in the quarter, to close the gap to 39-37 by halftime.

The Defenders appeared in control after a strong, early third-quarter as they extended their lead to eight (57-49) on a basket by Desta Hoogendoorn. With Dordt up by seven after another bucket by Hoogendoorn on the first possession of the fourth quarter, Northwestern finished off a 10-2 run with a three-pointer from Ashtyn Wobig to take their first lead (64-62) in the second half.

Moments later, Maddie Pottebaum converted her second three-pointer to put Northwestern ahead 67-64, and the teams traded baskets until the score was deadlocked at 71-71 in the final minute.

Dordt earned a stop on the defensive end, secured the rebound and called timeout with 21 seconds left. Sievers followed with the game-winner from around 10-feet away with just over a second remaining. Northwestern used a timeout, advanced the ball to halfcourt and inbounded a pass to Aubrey Metzger, whose last-second shot attempt was blocked by Defenders guard Willow Bleeker to preserve the win.
