HOW IT HAPPENED

Set One: Dordt 25, Morningside 21

The opening set featured six early ties, the last at 9-9, before Dordt created separation with a 5-1 stretch built on two Myra Carlson kills, a Morningside attack error and a block from Ellie Weg. The Mustangs closed within two at 21-19, but the Defenders answered with four of the final six points, including a service ace from Carlee Jackson and a kill by Haley Kuperus to secure the set. Morningside was limited to six kills in the frame.

Set Two: Morningside 25, Dordt 18

Morningside controlled the second set after taking the lead for good at 6-5. A pair of blocks and an ace pushed the margin to 15-11, and the Mustangs later used a 4-0 run to stretch the gap to 21-14. Dordt closed to within five at 23-18, but back-to-back kills closed the set and evened the match.

Set Three: Dordt 25, Morningside 14

The Defenders took control midway through the third set after trailing 7-6. Laney Wolfswinkel's serve sparked an eight-point Dordt run that turned a one-point deficit into a 14-7 lead. The stretch featured four kills from Myra Carlson, two from Ellie Dokter and a Morningside attack error. Dordt outscored the Mustangs 19-7 from that point forward and held Morningside to just eight kills in the set.

Set Four: Dordt 25, Morningside 22

Morningside built an 11-4 lead behind five straight Defender attack errors and a service ace before Dordt's response began. The Defenders chipped away and later turned momentum completely with a sequence beginning at 13-8. Three consecutive kills from Myra Carlson — each coming on an overpass or tight pass created by Morningside serve-receive issues — cut the deficit to 13-11. Dordt tied the set at 14-14 and eventually moved ahead 18-16 on back-to-back kills from Carlson.

The Defenders maintained the lead the rest of the way, getting a Tarren Spartz ace and later a kill from Ellie Dokter to reach match point at 24-20. Morningside fought off two points before a Dokter kill closed the match. For the third Dordt set win of the night, Morningside was again held to eight kills.
