Defenders Secure Sweep Of Judson On Walkoff Home Run

The Dordt University softball team swept Judson (Ill.) in a doubleheader played this morning in Kissimmee, Fla. The Defenders came away with an 8-4, extra-innings win in game one and earned a come-from-behind, walkoff 5-4 win in game two.

Dordt improves to 10-15 this season and after a day off on Sunday, will close out their Spring Break trip in Florida with games against Penn State - New Kensington and Webber International. 

Game One: 8-4 win (8 innings) | Box Score

Dordt scored four runs in the top of the eighth inning to secure an 8-4, extra-inning win in game one. 

Tied 4-4 and with Brooke Rule at second to start the eighth inning, Rule stole third and scored the go-ahead run after a throwing error by the catcher. Chloe Kreuz followed with a triple and scored the Defenders sixth run on an RBI single by Annabelle Hensley. Following a pitching change, Ashtyn Grissom hit a double to right field to score pinch runner Peyton Whipple. Sierra Pirkey delivered a two-out, RBI single, scoring pinch runner Brynn Torrenga for the Defenders final run.

Kreuz (5-8) struck out the side in the bottom of the eighth inning to clinch the Defenders win. The sophomore allowed six hits and three earned runs while striking out seven. 

Dordt totaled 10 hits, led by Grissom who went 2-for-4 matched her career-high with four RBIs. Kreuz, Hensley and Pirkey also had two htis with Kreuz scoring three runs.

Grissom put Dordt in front with a three-run home run in the top of the first inning, scoring both Hensley and Kreuz. The Defenders added a run in the top of the fifth after an RBI double by Hensley. 

Judson rallied in the sixth inning as the Eagles pushed across four runs on three hits. Tatyana Chavez drove in the first run with a double and Kait Marks later added an RBI single. Lexie Knowles drew a bases loaded walk that tied the game 4-4.

Abigael Marines (0-3) suffered the loss, giving up four runs in four innings. Chavez led Judson at the plate with two hits and drove in one.

Game Two: 5-4 win | Box Score

Dordt completed the sweep in game two as Annabelle Hensley led off the bottom of the seventh inning with a walkoff home run over the centerfield fence. 

The Defenders outhit Judson 10-5 and were led by Brooke Rule, Chloe Kreuz and Hensley with two hits each. 

Alexa Kopaska (2-4) pitched a scoreless sixth and seventh inning to earn the win for Dordt. Bailey Sample started the game in the circle, giving up five hits and four runs in five innings.

The Defenders grabbed a 1-0 lead on an RBI single by Kreuz that scored Rule from second in the bottom of the first inning. Judson scored all four of its runs in the second as Lexie Knowles delivered an RBI single and Grace Pekoc added a two-run, two-out single. 

Dordt rallied with a single run in each of the final four innings. Addison Stephenson hit an RBI single to score Hensley to cut the lead to 4-2 in the fourth inning. The Defenders made it a one-run game in the fifth on three singles by Hitchcock, Kreuz and Reiter. 

The Defenders tied the game on an RBI double by Rule to score Brynn Torrenga in the sixth.

Katherine Hrinda pitched the first five innings for the Eagles, giving up eight hits and three runs. Haley Slaymaker (1-4) gave up two htis and two runs in one-plus innings for the loss.
