Box Score 2 The Dordt University softball team showcased dominant pitching and abundant power hitting in earning a pair of wins on day one of the ASB Dome Classic played today at the American State Bank Sports Complex in Sioux Center, Iowa.
The Defenders shutout William Penn 4-0 behind the pitching of
Rylee Yager in game one and powered five home runs in a 15-4, six inning win over Viterbo in game two.
Dordt pushes its record to 12-2 this season and will play Dickinson State and Haskell on Saturday, Feb.28.
Game One: 4-0 win vs William Penn | Box Score
Rylee Yager pitched her first career shutout and went 3-for-4 at the plate in leading the Defenders to a 4-0 win over William Penn.
Yager (6-1) allowed eight hits, seven singles and one double, and did not allow a run in the full seven innings. Yager, the GPAC strikeouts leader, fanned eight Statesmen batters to push her total to 63 this season.
Scoreless in the bottom of the first,
Lauren Steenstra drove in Yager with a two-out double to give Dordt a 1-0 lead. The Defenders made it 2-0 after the next batter when
Sumaya Edwards tallied an RBI single to score Steenstra.
The Defenders pushed across their third run when
Chloe Kreuz led off with a triple and scored after an RBI single by Yager. Dordt concluded its scoring in the sixth on an RBI single by Tera Lynn Price.
Yager paced the Defenders 11-hit attack with a 3-for-4 performance at the plate. Steenstra added two hits and seven other Defender hitters had one hit each.
William Penn was led by Marin Frazee and Laila Smith with two hits each. Tori Smith (2-1) picked up the loss, allowing nine hits and three runs in four innings. The Statesmen drop to 4-3 this season.
Game Two: 15-4 (6 innings) win vs Viterbo | Box Score
The Defenders hit a program-record five home runs and scored a season-high 15 runs in its 15-4, six-inning win against Viterbo in the nightcap.
Chloe Kreuz and
Lauren Steenstra led the Defenders at the plate with both players going 3-for-4 with three RBI.
Addison Stephenson and
Peyton Whipple had two hits each and
Annabelle Hensley and Tera Lynn Price drove in two runs.
Dordt totaled a season-high 14 hits, eight for extra-bases, its third game this season with double-digit hits.
Kreuz (3-0) allowed seven hits and three runs in six innings to pick up her third win of the season. The junior struck out six.
Steenstra put the Defenders up 2-0 with a two-run home run in the top of the first inning, her third of the season. Viterbo pushed across a single run in each of the second and fourth innings on an RBI double by Alexis Watson in the second and Watson again delivering in the fourth with an RBI single.
Dordt took the lead for good with a three-run fifth inning as both Kreuz and Hensley went deep for a 5-2 advantage.
The V-Hawks responded with two runs in the bottom of the fifth on a sacrice fly by Marissa Carter-Olson and a run-scoring triple from Elie Klar.
The Defenders sent 14 batters to the plate in the decisive 10-run, 9-hit top of the sixth inning.
Peyton Whipple drove in the first of many runs with a single to score
Taylor Scholting. Price followed with a 2-run triple and came around to score on Kreuz's second home run to make the score 10-4. Later, both Steenstra and Scholting delievered RBI singles and Stephenson completed the scoring with a 2-run home run.
Watson and Klar paced the V-Hawks with two hits each while Watson (0-1) picked up the loss in the circle.
