Defender Volleyball Prevails In Five Sets Against Northwest

Defenders Battle for Season Opening Win

Dordt def. Northwest (Washington) 3-2 (25-23, 17-25, 25-18, 22-25, 17-15)

The Dordt Defender volleyball team secured a five-set win over the Northwest Eagles on Friday afternoon, August 26 in a match played at Fullerton, California as part of the Hope International Summer Slam.

The Defenders built a 19-15 win in set one after a Brenna Krommendyk kill but Northwest rallied to eventually tie the set at 22-22.  After a Dordt timeout the Eagles committed a service error and it was Krommendyk who scored the game winner for a 25-23 win in the first set.

Northwest started fast in set two and raced to a 16-8 lead.  Dordt cut into the deficit but got no closer than 19-16 before falling 25-17. Set three saw the Defenders take control with a 7-3 run midway through the set and won handily 25-17.

Dordt led early in set four but surrendered the lead in midway through the set at 12-11 and  a three point run put the Eagles ahead 16-12. Dordt came back to eventually take the lead at 21-20 on an Alli Timmermans kill but Northwest answered with three straight points of its own. Corrina Timmermans ended the string with a kill but Northwest scored the next two points for a 25-22 win to set up a decisive fifth set.

The fifth set was tied at 7-7, 8-8 and 9-9, but a three point run on a combination of kills and hitting errors extended a 12-9 lead for Northwest. Alli Timmermans stopped the run with a kill but a Northwest kill got it back to a 13-10 Northwest advantage.  A kill by Avey Amelse made it 13-11 and Allison Timmermans had back to back kills to tie the set. Each team traded a point for a 14-14 tie before Grace Langemeier put Dordt up 15-14. An Eagle kill tied the set at 15 but Brenna Krommendyk put a kill awa and then teamed up with Langemeier for a block for the 17-15 game winner.
