Defenders Finish 2-0 Friday With Win Over Westmont

Defenders Close Door In Fourth Set

Dordt def. Westmont 3-1 (25-15, 25-23, 23-25, 25-21)

The Dordt Defender volleyball secured its second win of the day at the Hope International Summer Slam with a 3-1 win over Westmont (California) late Friday night, August 26.

The Defenders started fast in set one and rolled to a convincing 25-15 win the set after a five point run to build a quick 13-4 lead that Westmont was never able to dent.

Westmont responded with a quick start of their own with a 10-3 lead but a six point Dordt run tightened the race. The Warriors seemed to right themselves by taking a 21-16 lead but Dordt had a three point run as an answer as Corrina Timmermans got a kill and Grace Langemeier and Ellie Voss responded with a pair of blocks each. The two-point difference remained after the teams traded two points each. A service error and attack error tied the set at 23-23 and Dordt got the final two points of the set on a block by Alli Timmermans and Ellie Voss and an attack error by Westmont.

Set three was tight through out with six ties up to 22-22. Phoebe Minch had a kill for the Warriors and an attack error by Dordt got the difference up to 24-22 and each team scored a point for a 25-23 final, forcing set four in the process.

The Defenders trailed briefly in set four by a 6-4 margin but a five point run turned it around with Dordt leading 9-6. Dordt was still up 10-7 when Westmont rallied to take a 14-12 lead with a 7-2 run highlighted by three straight points on kills by Minch. Dordt's answer came with Brenna Krommendyk getting a kill followed by a Madison Vis ace serve and Corrina Timmermans put Dordt up 15-14. Dordt never relinquished the lead again in fighting off the Westmont comeback for a 25-21 win.
