The Dordt University volleyball team overcame a 2-0 deficit to force a decisive fifth set but fell to host Northwestern College 3-2 (25-23, 25-19, 20-25, 23-25, 5-9) in a conference match between ranked teams.
The 23rd-ranked Defenders suffer their first loss in conference play, falling to 1-1 in the GPAC and 7-3 overall. No.8 Northwestern improves its record to 2-1 in the GPAC, 10-2 overall.
Corrina Timmermans led the Defender offense with 12 kills to go with 10 digs for her third double-double of the season.
Isabella Cumana hit for a career-high 11 kills in 27 attempts for a .333 percentage.
Brenna Krommendyk added nine kills and five blocks, hitting a team-leading .400 for the match.
How It Happened...
- Set One:
- Trading points early in the first set, Dordt put together four consecutive points on kills from Corrina Timmermans and an ace serve by Mia Gamet to take an 8-5 lead
- Dordt led by as many as four until a late 4-1 run by Northwestern put the hosts in front 20-19
- Tied at 20, 22 and again at 23, Northwestern scored the final two points on kills from Jazlin De Haan and Bekah Horstman to win 25-23
- Set Two:
- Tied 13-13. Northwestern scored four of the next five points to take control and win set two, 25-19
- Set Three:
- unlike the first two sets, Dordt trailed early in set three but used a 6-1 run to turn an 8-7 deficit into a 13-10 lead; kills from Alli Timmermans, Isabella Cumana and Ellie Voss sparked the Defenders run
- Northwestern rallied with four straight points to take the lead back (17-15) but kills from Voss and Corrina Timmeramans and NW error brought the set to an 18-18 tie
- still tied at 20, Dordt scored the final five points for the win (25-20)
- Set Four:
- another back and forth set led to a 22-22 tie; Cumana put away a set from Sophie Johnson to put Dordt in front for good (23-22)
- a pair of Northwestern errors clinched the win for Dordt and force a fifth set
- Set Five:
- Dordt could not overcome an early 6-2 deficit in the final set, falling 15-9
By the Numbers...
- Dordt hit 16% and totaled 11 blocks compared to Northwestern hitting at a 22% clip and seven blocks
- Sophie Johnson put up 22 assists and a career-best 15 digs, her second double-double of the season
- Megan Raszler also had a double-double with 18 assists and 13 digs
- Both Makenna Kooima and Madison Vis had 14 digs for the Defenders backrow
- Ellie Voss contributed five assisted blocks
