The Dordt Defenders were 3-1 winners in GPAC volleyball play Wednesday night at the DeWitt Gym over the Morningside Mustangs. Dordt controlled sets one and two but allowed Morningside to push the match to a fourth set before moving to 8-3 this season.
Dordt took a 5-0 lead in set one and the Defenders maintained a three to five point edge up to 18-15 when Morningside took advantage of back to back attack errors to get within 18-17.
Corrina Timmermans had a kills and
Megan Raszler a dump shot to go up 20-17 and the Mustangs never got closer than two as Dordt won 25-21.
Set two had the Defenders build a 13-4 lead after a block by
Danielle Vande Voort and
Grace Langemeier and Dordt had the set in hand up 20-8. A seven point run trimmed the difference to 20-15 but Dordt scored three in a row to lead 23-15 and went on to win 25-16.
It was Morningside's turn to start fast in set three and the Mustangs used an early advantage to fight off any Dordt rallies in winning 25-19. Dordt got as close as 21-17 late in the set but a three-point Morningside run effectively put the set out of reach.
The final set was close to 9-9 before Dordt scored on a service error, an
Allison Timmermans kill and a
Makenna Kooima service ace for a 12-9 lead and Morningside never led again in winning 25-20.
