Volleyball Sweeps Second GPAC Foe Of Week

The Dordt Defender volleyball team had little trouble with Mount Marty on Friday night, September 30 in Yankton, South Dakota.   Dordt used early runs in all three sets to establish control and turned away the Lancers for their fourth win of the GPAC season and tenth overall.

A five point run in the first set turned a 4-2 deficit into a 7-4 lead and Dordt eventually took an 18-11 lead on an Avey Amelse kills before winning 25-19.

In set two Sophie Johnson served for eight straight points as part of a nine point run that was again capped by an Amelse kill. The Lancers did battle back to within 15-13 but a kill from the back row by Lydia Van Kley followed by a Madison Vis service ace put Dordt up 17-13 and the Defenders held on as Mount Marty got within three on a couple occasions. Dordt won set two by an identical 25-19 score.

Set three belonged to Dordt as the Defenders went up 20-10 and won by an eventual 25-16 margin for their second win of the week.

THE NUMBERS

  • Dordt had a 41-22 kills advantage and hit for a .274 kill efficiency. Mount Marty was held to negative numbers with 22 kills against 23 attack errors.
  • Mount Marty had a 6-5 service ace edge but Dordt had an 8-5 points from blocks edge.
  • Isabella Cumana had 10 kills and Grace Langemeier eight.
  • Avey Amelse had eight kills and two service aces and Brenna Krommendyk had seven kills.
  • Megan Raszler and Campbell Marshall each had 17 assists.
  • Makenna Kooima got to 20 digs.
  • Dordt is now 10-4 overall and 4-2 in league play while Mount Marty is 6-9 and 1-6.

Dordt will travel to Omaha to face the College of Saint Mary on Saturday, October 1.

JACKI SMITH SAID

"I think our back row defense is getting better each night at reading hitters, reading the ball and making great plays. Through two sets Makenna had 15 digs—that's a excellent. Makenna, Madison, Lydia and even Sophie playing back there are making better reads and getting touches and along with that we had 16 block assists which means our block is slowing down hitters.  We need both to play well and tonight they did and our defense looked really good."
