Volleyball Drops Five-Set Decision

FINAL

Dakota Wesleyan def. Dordt 3-2 (23-25, 25-23, 22-25, 25-21, 15-12)

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Dordt Defender women's volleyball team lost its home finale on Saturday afternoon, October 28 by a 3-2 count to the Dakota Wesleyan Tigers.
Dordt had a 25-23 win in set one after building a four point lead midway through the set and didn't allow Dakota Wesleyan to complete the comeback late in the set, fighting off the rallies as the visitors got within one on several occasions. Peyton Doenhoefer's kill put Dordt on set point and Isabella Cumana finished the set with a kill for a 25-23 win.

Dordt's momentum carried into the second set as the Defenders built a 9-3 lead after a Macy Kamler ace serve finished an 8-0 run.  Wesleyan answered with a run of its own and had it down to 10-9 before a service error started a four point streak for Dordt that included two Riley Doenhoefer kills. Dordt still appeared in control up 18-11, but Dakota Wesleyan scored nine of the next ten points for a 20-19 lead. Dordt never led again in the set and lost 25-23, getting within one on two separate occasions.

In set three it was Dordt's turn to rally, trailing 9-5 Dordt tied it at 9-9 and took the lead at 13-12 after a Bryleigh Schweer kill. The teams traded points up to 17-17 when an attack error and a Riley Doenhoefer kill put the Defenders up 19-17. The lead grew to 22-17 after an Ellie Weg and Riley Doenhoefer block and Dordt held on to win 25-22.
Wesleyan had an early 10-5 lead in set four and didn't allow Dordt to tie it, fighting off several rallies to within one and evened the match with a 25-21 win.  Wesleyan took a 4-0 lead in set five but Dordt came back to tie it at 8-8 on a block. A Dordt attack error put Wesleyan back in the lead and the Tigers didn't allow a tie the rest of the set in winning 15-12.
