Doane defeats Dordt 3-1 (21-25, 25-16, 25-22, 25-22)
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Dordt Defender volleyball lost a 3-1 decision on the road to Doane in Crete, Nebraska on Saturday afternoon, October 7 in GPAC volleyball.
Dordt started set one with a 6-0 lead as
Riley Doenhoefer had back-to-back kills and also factored in on a block with
Bryleigh Schweer for the lead. Doane rallied and took the lead at 10-9 and maintained an advantage up to 17-16 when the Defenders went on a three-point run with kills by Schweer and
Tarren Spartz. Dordt never trailed again and won the set on a service error.
Dordt led 5-3 in set two after a Schweer kill but three unanswered by the hosts gave them a 6-5 lead and they never trailed again as the Tigers outscored Dordt 9-3 over the final 12 points for the 25-16 win. The Defenders came back clicking and led 11-4 after a six-point run punctuated by an
Ellie Weg kill and the lead was still seven at 18-11. A five-point Doane run made it interesting but Dordt seemed to regroup and held a 21-16 lead.
Doane rallied again and this time tied the score 21-21 and got the final point in the run off a block. Dordt led briefly 22-21 but a kill and a block by Doane put them in front and back-to-back Gracie Burwell kills gave Doane the 25-22 win.
Dordt built and early 7-2 lead in set four and maintained a lead up to 13-12 when the Tigers scored back-to-back points. Three ties ensued with Dordt reeling off three points in a row to regain an 18-16 lead but the hosts and another comeback, taking a 20-19 lead and after Dordt tied the set at 22-22 a service error and kill ended the set and match for Doane.
THE NUMBERS
- Dordt had a 54-50 kills advantage in the match with Doane holding a 13-12 points from blocks edge.
- Doane had six ace serves to two for the Defenders.
- Bryleigh Schweer had 15 kills to lead Dordt.
- Riley Doenhoefer had 13 kills and two block assists.
- Tarren Spartz accounted for 10 kills.
- Kelly McArthur put up 28 assists and had 11 digs.
- Makenna Kooima had 31 digs to pace Dordt and Ellie Weg had a solo block and seven block assists.
- Dordt is now 2-8 in the GPAC and 3-13 overall.
