The Dordt Defender softball team earned a come from behind 6-5 win over the Dakota State Trojans in play at the ASB Sports Complex in Sioux Center on Friday, February 17.
Dordt got a run in the second inning when
Jessica Flaherty reached on an error that allowed
Aurora Tyson to score. Dakota State had an answer in the top of the third when the visitors got back to back doubles but also had a runner thrown out at home leaving the score tied 1-1. Dakota State added to the lead with a two run fourth inning and that held until the bottom of the fifth when
Lauren Steenstra singled to centerfield allowing
Ivy Terpstra and
Emma Groen to score for a 4-3 Dordt lead. Dordt also got a run when
Ella Koster singled in
Karli Olsen.
The Defenders were unable to keep the lead and Dakota State scored twice in the top of the sixth but had a runner picked off third to keep the score at 5-4.
Ivy Terpstra reached on an error in the sixth and
Chandler Schemper raced home to tie the game in the bottom of the sixth.
Alexa Kopaska came on in relief for the Defenders in the top of the seventh and
Brooklynn Cox ended it with a one-out double to get Tyson in from second base to win it. Cox's drive was over the head of the centerfielder and bounced off the base of the fence.
THE NUMBERS
- Both teams had 11 hits and both were charged with two errors.
- Alexa Kopaska got the win in relief and struck out one with one hit allowed.
- Hailey Wilken pitched the first six innings and allowed three earned runs out of five total and struck out two while scattering 10 hits.
- Emma Groen was 2-4 with a run scored and two singles.
- Ella Koster 2 was 2-4 with two singles and a run batted in.
- Lauren Steenstra had a two-run single.
- Aurora Tyson scored two runs and Jessica Flaherty had two singles and a run batted in.
- Dordt is now 4-1.
