The Dordt University softball team lost its second game of the season, coming up short against William Penn 2-0 in the final game Friday night at their home classic.
Dordt completed the day with a 1-1 record as they earned a 6-5, walk-off win against Dakota State earlier in the day. The Defenders record moves to 4-2 heading into Saturday's games against Mayville State and Peru State.
Dordt's offense totaled four hits, three singles and a double, off Statesmen winning pitcher Chelsey Huff (1-1). Huff sent the Defenders down in order in four of the seven innings and struck out five without giving up a walk.
Karli Olsen was one of four Defender hitters with a hit, reaching base on a one-out double in the fourth.
Ella Koster,
Taylor Knaack and
Brynn Torrenga had the other hits for head coach
Jeff Zomer's squad.
Scoreless through four innings, William Penn broke through with a single run in the fifth. Kiana Young hit a two-out single that scored Bailee Rinn from third to give the Statesmen a 1-0 lead. William Penn plated a key insurance run in the seventh when Wilson singled and scored after a Defenders throwing error.
Dordt's best scoring chances came in both the fourth and fifth innings when they had a runner at third base but were unable to come up with the game-tying hit.
Abby Kraemer (1-2) pitched well despite the loss as she gave up six hits (all singles), one earned run and struck out six.
Dordt is now 1-5 all-time against William Penn, earning its lone win against the Statesmen in 2009.
The Defenders will play in the first two games on Saturday, beginning with Mayville State at 10am.
