Softball Sweeps Doane

The Dordt Defenders secured a sweep over Doane in softball play on Saturday, April 15 to improve to 8-2 in the GPAC.  Dordt won first game 1-0 and the second game was equally tense with Dordt prevailing 3-1.

GAME 1

Neither team was able to get much offense going with Dordt getting a pair of runners on base in the fourth inning. Chandler Schemper was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and she advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. Ella Koster followed with a single and stole second base but the next two  outs were recorded without incident and Doane sidestepped the trouble.

Doane also threatened but had a runner thrown out trying to steal.

Dordt finally got the only run of the game in the bottom of the sixth inning when Karli Olsen it a line drive into the leftfield corner and she was able to race around the bases for an inside the park homerun. Doane was retired in order in the top of the seventh with the second out a leaping catch of a line drive by Dordt's shortstop Emma Groen.

THE NUMBERS

  • Dordt had a 3-2 hits advantage and Dordt committed the lone error of the game.
  • Abby Kraemer earned her 14th pitching win of the season while allowing two hits and striking out four with one walk issued.
  • Olsen's homerun was the only extra base hit of the game and Ella Koster and Aurora Tyson each had singles.

GAME 2

Dordt started the scoring with a Lauren Steenstra single that got Ivy Terpstra across. Terpstra had opened the inning with a single and moved into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt.  Dordt added a run in the third when Ella Koster reached on a two-out single and stole second base. Terpstra then singled and Koster raced home.

Doane threatened with back to back singles to start the fourth but a line out followed by a pop out and strikeout ended the inning.

Koster figured into Dordt's final run in the fifth Chandler Schemper scored when Koster put the ball in play and reached on an error.

Down 3-0, the Tigers got a double with two outs and a single put runners at the corners. A third straight hit scored  a run. Doane then got a single but the runner from second was thrown out by Brooklynn Cox from right field and the threat ended.

Doane got a two-out walk in the top of the seventh but the third out was recorded on fly out to the shortstop.
