The Dordt Defender softball team was swept by Morningside in a doubleheader played at the ASB Sports Complex in Sioux Center, Iowa on Friday, April 21. The Mustangs secured 4-1 and 4-0 wins in GPAC play in games that were originally scheduled to be played in Sioux City, Iowa but were moved due to cold weather and windy conditions.
GAME 1
Morningside scored two runs in the first inning and then held on as Dordt cut into the lead in the sixth inning.
Lauren Steenstra's solo homerun cut the lead to 2-1 after the top of the sixth but Morningside answered with two runs in the sixth inning and held on for a 4-1 win. Dordt missed earlier opportunities with the bases loaded in the fourth and runners on second and third in the fifth but couldn't deliver a timely hit.
THE NUMBERS
- Steenstra's homerun was the first of her career and one of five hits Dordt secured. Four other Defenders had singles.
- Abby Kraemer allowed four runs on seven hits with five strikeouts and is now 15-5.
- Dordt was outhit 7-5 and both teams committed an error.
GAME 2
The Morningside Mustangs scored two runs in the third and another run each in the fifth and sixth on the way to a 4-0 victory.
Dordt got a double from
Emma Groen in the second inning with one bout but the next two batters were retired. Dordt also missed on a chance to score in the sixth inning with a walk to
Chandler Schemper and
Karli Olsen singled. A ground out to first was the second out of the frame and a line drive out to centerfield ended the inning.
THE NUMBERS
- Dordt was outhit 7-3 with Emma Groen collecting two hits and Karli Olsen had a single.
- Alexa Kopaska went six innings and allowed four runs on seven this with five strikeouts and one walk.
- Dordt is now 9-5 in the league and 28-10 overall. Morningside is 11-3 in the league and 26-9 overall.

Dordt is scheduled to go to Omaha, Nebraska on Monday, April 24 to face the College of Saint Mary.
