VS MOUNT MERCY
Dordt managed a sweep of Mount Mercy in their first contest on Saturday, September 2 at a classic hosted by the College of Saint Mary in North Sioux City, South Dakota.
The Defenders were up 10-6 early but a four-point run by the Mustangs tied the score 14-14. The set was tied again at 15 with Mount Mercy getting a three point run and leading 18-15. A
Tarren Spartz kill followed by a pair of
Riley Doenhoefer kills tied the score at 18-18 and Dordt was still down 23-21 when the Defenders called a timeout. A service error followed and
Ellie Dokter had a kill.Â
An attack error gave Dordt the lead at 24-23 and after the Mustangs tied the score Dokter had two kills in a row to end the set.
Dordt pushed ahead 19-12 in set two and managed a 21-12 lead after two errors by the Mustangs. Mount Mercy did rally to within 24-22, surviving three set point serves but an attack error ended the set with a Dordt 25-22 win.
Dordt never trailed in set three and finished the set with a six-point run that included three Doenhoefer kills and three
Brooklyn Leusink kills.
THE NUMBERS VS MOUNT MERCY
VS VITERBO
The Defenders stood toe-to-toe with the no. 4 in the nation Viterbo V-Hawks but fell 3-0. The first set was tight with 12 ties up to 17-17. Viterbo managed to take a 21-18 lead but kills by
Bryleigh Schweer and
Tarren Spartz later got the Defenders to within 24-23 but the V-Hawks were 25-23 winners with a kill on the next point ending the set.
Viterbo led start to finish in set two with the Defenders creeping to within 20-18 on a block by
Brooklyn Leusink, but that's as close as the Defenders got before losing 25-20. An early 4-0 run turned into a 6-3 lead for Viterbo and the Defenders played much of the remainder of the set at a five-point deficit on the way to the 25-19 loss.
THE NUMBERS VS VITERBO
- Viterbo had a 43-35 kills advantage with eight service aces to Dordt's six. Both teams had 10 service errors.
- Viterbo had a .407 kill efficiency while Dordt's was .242.
- Riley Doenhoefer had 12 kills and Tarren Spartz had eight.
- Bryleigh Schweer added five kills and two ace serves.
- Sophie Johnson put up 30 assists and had two ace serves.
