The Dordt University softball team scored a combined 21 runs in a pair of 5-innings wins against Waldorf (12-2) and Dakota State (9-1) today at the American State Bank Sports Complex.
The Defenders extend their win streak to five games and improve to 6-7 overall heading into Saturday's games against Dickinson State (noon) and Mayville State (4pm).Â
Dordt accounted for 22 hits, 21 runs and nine walks in the two-game set, led by
Lauren Steenstra who was a perfect 5-for-5 with three doubles, a home run and seven RBIs.
Emma Groen combined to go 4/6 with a home run and four RBIs while four other Defenders had multiple hits.Â
Game One, Key Plays:
- down 2-1 in the second, Emma Groen hit a two-out, RBI single that scored Kacie Karsak to tie the score at two
- the Defenders pushed three runs across in the top of the third to take the lead for good
- Dordt took advantage of a couple of Waldorf errors and Steenstra hit a two-run double to score both Karsak and Ashtyn Grissom
- Dordt sent 10 batters to the plate in a seven-run, seven hit fourth inning, with all but one hit coming with two outs
- Aurora Tyson and Karsak hit RBI singles
- Grissom and Steenstra both hit RBI doubles
- Groen hit a 2-run home run

- Dordt outhit Waldorf 12-6
- the Defenders were flawless in the field while Waldorf committed four errors
- Chloe Kreuz (4-2) won her third consecutive start, giving up six hits, 2 runs in five innings
- four Defenders, Tyson, Karsak, Steenstra and Groen, all had two hits
- Waldorf (0-3) was led by Kyleigh Morris with two hits
- Maddie Dalke (0-2) gave up nine runs in 3.2 innings and picked up the loss
Game Two, Key Plays:
- the Defenders scored four runs and sent nine batters to the plate in the bottom of the first inning
- Steenstra, Groen and Brynn Torrenga delivered three consecutive RBI singles (Torrenga was a 2-run single) all with two outs
- Dakota State scored its only run on a double steal in the top of the third inning
- Dordt answered with a run in its third inning when Steenstra doubled and scored after back-to-back singles by Torrenga and Peyton Whipple
- leading 5-1, Steenstra hit a three-run home run, scoring both Kreuz and Karli Olsen, to give Dordt an 8-1 lead
- Kreuz ended the game with a walk-off single in the fifth that scored Whipple

- Dordt outhit the Trojans 10-4
- Alexa Kopaska (1-5) earned the win and gave up a season-low four hits to go with two strikeouts
- Steenstra was perfect from the plate once again, going 3-for-3 with four RBIs
- Kreuz, Groen and Torrenga all had two hits to pace the Defenders offense
- Maycee Bricker (0-3) gave up six hits, five runs in 2.2 innings and factored in the loss for DSU
- four DSU players had one hit each, led by Jordyn Jeffries and Hannah McFarland with a double
Defender Notes:
- this was the second win of the season against Dakota State
- Steenstra extended her hit streak to seven games
- Tyson has hit safely in 10 of her 13 games played
