The Dordt Defender volleyball team split a pair of matches at the goSarpy.com Classic hosted by Bellevue University on Friday, August 23. The Defenders lost a 3-1 decision to Grand View (Iowa) to start play and rebounded for a 3-0 sweep of Saint Mary (Kan.) to end the day.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Dordt grabbed an early lead in set one, taking an 11-4 lead after a string of four points in a row with kills by
Myra Carlson, Payton Poppema, an ace serve by
Kylie Beckering and a Viking attack error. The Vikings were able to close to within 19-16 after scoring four points in a row but Dordt didn't allow Grand View to get any closer and Dordt won the set 25-20 with
Carlee Jackson getting a kill to finish the set.
The Vikings reversed course in set two and took a 10-4 lead and the difference was no less than four the rest of the set the Vikings took a 25-16 decision. Set three Dordt was down 17-13 by kills by
Haley Kuperus ad
Carlee Jackson along with block by
Payton Doenhoefer and Mary Carlson helped tie the set at 17. It was tied again at 18 and 19 before Grand View scored back-to-back points to lead 21-19 and the Vikings took a 2-1 set lead with a 25-21 lead.
Grand View led 10-5 and fought off a Dordt rally to tie it at 10-10 and again at 13-13. Four points in a row by the Vikings gave them a lead they never relinquished for a 25-18 win.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Dordt bounced back from a loss to Grand View with a win over Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference member Saint Mary 3-0. The meeting was the first in history between the two teams.
Dordt led set one from the start and took a 14-7 lead and the Spires got back to within 21-20, scoring five out of six points before
Haley Kuperus recorded a kill to stop the run. The Kuperus kill started a run of three points in a row for a 24-20 advantage before winning 25-21.
Saint Mary ran off five points in a row for an 11-7 lead in set two and the Spires extended the lead to 19-12 with five out of six points.Â
Myra Carlson had back to back kills followed by a Saint Mary attack error. The Spires scored a point and Dordt followed with another Carlson kill and
Kylie Beckering added an ace serve. A pair of Saint Mary points seemed to stop the threat but Dordt made one more rally as
Payton Doenhoefer had a kill to ignite a four point rally. Saint Mary scored two out of three points to get to set point but a bad set by the Spires followed by an
Ellie Dokter kill tied it at 24-24. Saint Mary had two more set point serves but Dordt withstood both and
Ellie Dokter had a kill to tie the set 26-26 and
Peyton Poppema had a kill followed by a Dokter kill to end it 28-26.
Dordt took a lead it never relinquished at 5-4 and held off Saint Mary's rallies to tie it twice and went on to win 25-22. The final tie was 14-14.

Dordt had a 46-42 kills advantage and a 7-5 ace serves edge.
Dordt scored six points on blocks and a 74-67 digs edge.
