The Dordt Defender volleyball team split its' two matches on Saturday, August 24 to conclude the goSarpy.com Classic hosted by Bellevue University with a 2-2 weekend record. Dordt lost to no. 25 rated Ottawa (Kan.) and followed with a 3-1 win over John Brown (Ark.). The Defenders are 4-2 this season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Set one was close and sets two and three had increasingly wide margins of victory for the Braves.
The Defenders had a 7-4 lead in set one after an
Ellie Dokter kill but the Braves responded with four points in a row and the match was a back-and-forth affair from there with seven lead changes. Dordt managed a 23-22 lead after another kill by Dokter but the Braves regained the lead for good with two points in a row and won it on a block 25-23.
Tied 7- 7 in set two, the Braves scored three in a row and never trailed again in winning 25-17 and set three saw Ottawa get up 9-3 and then the Braves effectively put the set away with a 9-0 run after Dordt cut the difference to 10-8.

Ottawa had a 47-33 kills advantage and hit for a .373 kill efficiency.
Dordt ended with a .112 kill efficiency and was limited to four kills in set three.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Dordt came back from the sweep loss to Ottawa and a first-set setback against John Brown to win three sets in a row and split the weekend of four matches.Â
Set one was tied 14-14 after an
Ellie Weg kill but three points in a row by John Brown put the Eagles in control and a late Dordt rally got them within 24-22 before falling 25-22. A 4-0 run to start set two followed for Dordt and the lead was as many as 13-5 before the Eagles cut the difference to 13-10 with five points in a row. A service error ended the threat and Dordt worked out to an 18-12 lead and eventually won 25-19.
Leading 8-7 in set three Dordt used a four point run with points by
Ellie Dokter and
Ellie Weg on kills and a
Madison Vis ace serve coupled with a Weg and
Haley Kuperus block for a 12-7 advantage. John Brown got as close as 22-20 in the set but kills by Dokter and Weg and a Dokter kill ended the threat.
John Brown regrouped and set four was tied 8-8 but
Haley Kuperus ignited a 8-0 run and had four kills in the streak and John Brown never recovered with Dordt winning 25-18. Â Â
