The Dordt Defender volleyball team split its matches on Friday, August 30 at North Sioux City, South Dakota. Dordt lost a 3-0 decision to nationally rated Benedictine and came from behind to beat Mayville State 3-2.

Benedictine started fast in set one and established control with a 25-16 win and then built a 24-16 lead in set two before Dordt's four point run cut the gap to 24-20 before an attack error ended the set and the Ravens had a 2-0 lead. Benedictine scored the first five points of the third set and rode that to a 25-16 final.

The Dordt Defenders needed five sets to slip by Mayville State in the second meeting of the two teams this season. Dordt pulled away from a 17-15 lead in set one with four points in a row with two kills by
Tarren Spartz, a
Kelly McArthur ace and a Mayville State attack error. Dordt maintained the advantage to a 25-18 win with
Haley Kuperus punctuating the set win.
The Comets regrouped quickly, getting out to a 12-4 advantage and Mayville State was never challenged on the way to a 25-14 win. Set two was tied 8-8 after a Spartz kill but Mayville State scored seven in a row and used that advantage for a 25-17 win and a 2-1 sets lead.
The Comets took a 7-3 lead in set four and the Defenders responded with a three point run with
Ellie Dokter and
Haley Kuperus bookending a Mayville State attack error. Dordt added another three points to take a 10-9 lead.
Mayville State tied it on three different occasions but an
Ellie Weg kill,
Ellie Dokter ace and a
Kelly McArthur block put the Defenders up 19-15. Dordt eventually won it 25-20 with Spartz ending it with a kill.
Dordt never trailed in set five and held off a late charge by the Comets that had the lead down to 11-10 before an attack error and a
Tarren Spartz kill ended the threat as Dordt won it 15-12.
