Women's Volleyball | Defenders Split Friday Matches

The Dordt Defender volleyball team split its two matches on Friday, August 29 in Oskaloosa, Iowa in a classic hosted by William Penn.  The Defenders swept Southwestern (Kansas) and lost a five-set match with William Penn to end the day.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Set 1 featured nine ties and six lead changes before Dordt closed on an 11–2 run.  The set also included Kylie Beckering serving four straight points (including 3 aces) to turn a 14–14 tie into an 18–14 lead.

Set 2 saw Southwestern take an early 5–2 lead, but Dordt rallied behind five straight points from the service line to pull ahead for good. A six-point Dordt burst (from 5–5 to 11–5) broke the set open.

Set 3 was controlled by Dordt throughout, with the Defenders building their largest lead of the match at 13 points (25–12 final). Peyton Poppema scored six points (4 kills, 2 aces) during a mid-set stretch.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Set 1: William Penn built an early 9–4 lead behind two Alyssa Herrera kills and never trailed. Dordt closed to within 18–17 on a Laney Wolfswinkel kill, but the Statesmen finished on a 7–3 run to win 25–20.

Set 2: Tied 19–19, Carlee Jackson served two straight points and Sara Holleman added a kill to give Dordt the separation they needed to even the match 25–21.

Set 3: Dordt led 14–11, but William Penn used a 6–1 run highlighted by Reagan Lewis at the net to take control and win 25–21.

Set 4: Dordt answered big as Kylie Beckering served three aces during a 9–2 burst that turned a 9–8 edge into an 18–10 lead. The Defenders forced a deciding set with a 25–16 win.

Set 5: The hosts never trailed and built a 7-2 lead that eventually grew to 12-5.  Dordt rallied with four straight points on a pair of Laney Wolfswinkel kills and Tarren Spartz added the other two. William Penn used a time out and broke the string only to have Wolfswinkel spark a another four-point run to get within 13-12. Dordt never tied the set as the teams traded points and William Penn eventually prevailed 15-13.
