Hensley's Walkoff Single Against Dickinson State Concludes Unbeaten Weekend

Annabelle Hensley hit a walk-off single that scored pinch-runner Taylor Scholting from second in leading the Dordt University softball team to a 6-5 win over Dickinson State (N.D.) to complete an unbeaten 4-0 weekend at the American State Bank Sports Complex Softball Classic - Feb.13-14. The Defenders defeated Bismarck State (N.D.) 8-0 in six innings earlier in the day. Dordt improves its record to 10-1 this season and is off to its best start in program history.

Game One: 8-0 (6 innings) win vs Bismarck State

Abigail Tweety pitched a complete-game, one-hitter in leading the Defenders to an 8-0 win (6 innings) over Bismarck State in the first game today.

Tweety (2-0) gave up just one hit, a single in the fifth inning, walked four and recorded six strikeouts in her second career start as a Defender.

Dordt erupted for four runs on four hits and four walks in the top of the first inning. Kacie Karsak delivered one of the big hits with a two-run, two-out single that scored Chloe Kreuz and Annabelle Hensley. Addison Stephenson followed with a single and plated Ashtyn Grissom from second for a 3-0 lead while Tera Lynn Price earned a bases-loaded walk for the final run in the first.

The score remained the same until the sixth inning where Dordt tallied the final four runs. Price led off with a triple and came around to score on a Kreuz single. Following a Mystics pitching change, Hensley reached base with an infield single to score Kreuz and give Dordt a 6-0 lead. Grissom followed with a 2-run single that pushed across the Defenders final two runs in Hensley and Rylee Yager.

Seven players had at least one hit in the balanced Defenders offense that totaled nine hits. Both Kreuz and Yager had two hits each while Grissom and Karsak both drove in two runs.

Jamison Langois (0-1) allowed seven hits and seven runs in the first five-plus innings for the Mystics, who fall to 1-5 this season.

Game Two: 6-5 win vs Dickinson State

Annabelle Hensley capped a 3-for-4 night at the plate with a walkoff single to give Dordt a 6-5 win over Dickinson State in the final game of the ASB Dome Classic.

Tied 5-5 in the bottom of the seventh, Chloe Kreuz and Rylee Yager hit back-to-back singles with one out. After a conference on the infield by the Dickinson State players and coaches, Hensley slapped a single to the rightfield side to score Kreuz from second and earn the walkoff win.

Hensley's single concluded a great night at the plate where she went 3-for4 with two home runs and four RBI. Yager matched the sophomore with three hits as well and scored a run. Kreuz and Lauren Steenstra also had one hit each.

Yager (5-0) stayed unbeaten and improved to 5-0 this season with a complete-game victory, reaching double-digit strikeouts for the third time this season with 10 K's.

For the second consecutive game, Dordt's offense started fast with three runs in the bottom of the first inning. Yager tripled to left-centerf and scored on a throwing error by the shortstop. Hensley and Steenstra followed with back-to-back solo home runs for a 3-0 lead.

Dickinson State came up with two runs in the third off a Ashlee Potter two-run home run and tied the score during the fourth inning on a single to right-field by Jessa Duggan. The Blue Hawks took the lead briefly with two more runs in the top of the fifth only to have the Defenders answer back with a Hensley two-run home run with two outs and tie score at five.

Yager shut the door on any Dickinson State rally in the top of the seventh with consecutive strikeouts and a Blue Hawks runner at third.
