Men's Track and Field | GPAC Indoor Championship Preview

The Event:

  • the Dordt University men's track and field team will compete in the 2026 Great Plains Athletic Conference Indoor Championship this weekend (Feb.20-21). 
  • the two-day event will take place at the Holwerda Family Indoor Track on the campus of Dordt University in Sioux Center, Iowa
  • the heptathlon is the only event on Friday, Feb. 20 with the first of its four events on day one beginning at 1:15pm.
  • the majority of the competition will take place on Saturday, Feb. 21, with the first of the final three events of the heptathlon at 9am, field events beginning at 10am and track events at 11am
  • the championship concludes with the awards ceremony around 8:30pm.

The Competition:

  • all GPAC schools that have track and field are scheduled to compete (11 teams)
  • there are a total of 19 events (10 individual running events, 6 field events, 2 relays, 1 multi-event) scored at the indoor championship, with the top eight individual places scoring points for their team (10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1)
  • the team with the most points after all of the events have finished wins the conference championship.
  • the top eight finishers in each individual event earn all-conference honors; top three finishers in relays earn all-conference honors.

Last Year:

  • Dordt University finished second of nine teams at the 2025 Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) Indoor Championships held at the DWU / Avera Sports and Wellness Complex in Mitchell, S.D. 
  • the Defenders totaled 159 points, second to Doane with 220.5 points
  • Dordt won five titles, three by Payton Mauldin
  • 28 Defender entries earned all-conference honors, 27 individuals and one relay
  • Defender athletes set three championship records:
    • Dayton Brunsting - 1000m Heptathlon, broke old mark (2:40.91) set by Grant Brouwer (Dordt) in 2021
    • Payton Mauldin - 600m, broke old mark (1:19.23) set by Jacob Koczman (Northwestern) in 2001
    • 4x400 Relay, broke old mark (3:18.66) set by Mount Marty in 2019
  • one program record, Ryan Schober in the 60m, was set

  • Dordt has finished among the top five teams in each of the last nine years and among the top two in each of the last six years. The Defenders have won two GPAC titles, taking home the championship last season and in 2021.
