The Dordt Defender volleyball team improved to 8-2 with wins over Evangel (Mo.) and the University of Saint Mary (Kan.) on Friday at the College of Saint Mary Labor Day Classic in Omaha, Nebraska.

The Dordt University volleyball team earned a 3-0 win over Evangel (Mo.) in its opening match at the College of Saint Mary Labor Day Classic on Friday afternoon in Omaha, Nebraska.
The Defenders won by scores of 25-13, 25-23 and 25-11, improving to 7-2 this season. Evangel fell to 5-5.
Dordt scored the first point of the opening set and never trailed after a 1-1 tie. The Defenders used an 8-2 run to build a 12-5 advantage, getting three kills from
Ellie Weg during the stretch. Dordt hit .538 in the set, committing just one attack error in 26 attempts, and closed out the 25-13 win on a block by
Ada Dekkers and
Shayna Van Dyken.
The Defenders overcame an early deficit in the second set and opened a 20-15 lead on a Van Dyken kill.
Haley Kuperus put away consecutive kills to give Dordt the 25-23 win.
Dordt scored four straight points to begin the third set and later used a 9-2 run to extend its lead to 18-7. The Defenders held Evangel to six kills and a negative hitting percentage in the set, finishing the sweep with a 25-11 victory.

The Dordt University volleyball team completed a 2-0 day with a five-set win over the University of Saint Mary (Kan.) on Friday night at the College of Saint Mary Labor Day Classic in Omaha, Nebraska.
The Defenders won by scores of 25-10, 25-27, 25-14, 21-25 and 15-9 to improve to 8-2. Saint Mary fell to 5-5.
Dordt scored the first eight points of the opening set behind the serving of
Chloe Huisman.
Haley Kuperus put down four kills during the run, while Huisman added two service aces. The Defenders hit .438 and totaled 18 kills in the 25-10 win.
The Defenders appeared positioned to take a two-set lead after building advantages of 16-11 and 23-17 in the second set. Saint Mary answered with six consecutive points to tie the score at 23. Kuperus twice fought off set point with kills, but the Spires scored the final two points for a 27-25 win.
Saint Mary led 6-2 early in the third set before Dordt took control with an 8-1 run.
Carlee Jackson contributed two assists and a service ace during the surge. The Defenders later scored five consecutive points to extend their lead to 23-13 and went on to win 25-14.
The Spires built a 15-8 advantage in the fourth set. Dordt battled back with a 9-2 run, cutting the lead to 20-19, and a
Shayna Van Dyken kill tied the score at 21. Saint Mary responded by scoring the final four points to force a deciding set.
Dordt broke a 4-4 tie in the fifth set with two consecutive points and never trailed again. Leading 8-6, the Defenders used a 3-0 run that included kills from
Laney Wolfswinkel and Van Dyken.
Ada Dekkers recorded three kills down the stretch, and Weg closed the match with a solo block.
