The Dordt University volleyball team defeated Peru State in straight sets before dropping a five-set match to Viterbo on Saturday at the College of Saint Mary Labor Day Classic in Omaha, Nebraska.
The Defenders finished the day with a 9-3 season record.

Dordt limited Peru State to a .029 attack percentage in a 25-18, 25-15, 26-24 sweep.

The teams traded points throughout the opening set before Dordt took an 18-14 lead. Peru State closed within 19-17, but the Defenders scored six of the final seven points. Three consecutive Bobcat attack errors ended the set, 25-18.
Peru State scored the first two points of the second set and held a 6-5 advantage before Dordt took control with six straight points.
Haley Wielenga served two aces during the run, and
Shayna Van Dyken put down two kills.
The Defenders later extended their lead to 20-11 on an ace from
Scarlett Winterfeld. Dordt scored five of the final seven points, and Wielenga closed the 25-15 win with her third ace of the set.
Peru State led 22-18 in the third set before Dordt rallied with five consecutive points.
Chloe Huisman delivered an ace during the run, which gave the Defenders a 23-22 advantage.
The Bobcats tied the set at 24, but
Tavyn Sichmiller put Dordt back in front with a kill.
Ellie Weg and
Haley Kuperus combined for a block on the next point to complete the sweep.
Van Dyken led Dordt with 10 kills and hit .348.
Ada Dekkers and Sichmiller each put down seven kills, while Kuperus added six kills and five blocks. Weg finished with five kills, hit .500 and totaled four blocks.
Huisman led Dordt with 16 assists and added eight digs.
Carlee Jackson totaled 11 assists, six digs and two aces.
Kylie Beckering recorded a team-high 11 digs, and Wielenga served three aces.

Dordt rallied from a two-set deficit before Viterbo scored the final two points of the deciding set to defeat the Defenders 25-21, 25-20, 21-25, 16-25, 15-13.

Viterbo scored the first four points of the opening set and led 20-15 before Dordt closed within three on kills by Dekkers and Kuperus. The V-Hawks later reached set point at 24-17, but Dordt fought off four set points before Makena Ihle ended the set with a kill.
The second set included eight ties before Viterbo broke a 16-16 deadlock. The V-Hawks scored six of the next seven points to build a 22-17 advantage and took a two-set lead with a 25-20 win.
Dordt responded by scoring nine of the first 11 points in the third set. The Defenders extended their lead to 20-6 and held off a late Viterbo rally to win 25-21. [

The Defenders hit .444 in the fourth set and overcame an early 8-5 deficit. Dordt used a 9-1 run to take a 14-9 lead and later scored five consecutive points to extend its advantage to 21-14. Weg put down six kills without an error in the set, and
Laney Wolfswinkel closed the 25-16 win with consecutive kills.
Dordt carried the momentum into the fifth set and built leads of 3-0 and 9-5. The Defenders were still in front 11-8 following a kill by Winterfeld, but Viterbo answered with five straight points to take a 13-11 lead.
Wolfswinkel stopped the run with a kill, and
Peyton Poppema followed with an ace to tie the set at 13. Isabel Rubenzer put Viterbo back in front with a kill, and Ihle ended the match on the next point.
Dekkers led Dordt with 12 kills, hit .550 and totaled five blocks. Weg added 11 kills with a .409 attack percentage and six blocks. Wolfswinkel totaled 10 kills, while Kuperus finished with nine kills and five blocks.
Huisman distributed 30 assists and added eight digs and two aces. Jackson recorded 24 assists and 13 digs. Beckering led the back row with 18 digs, and Wielenga added nine.
